Abstract

At the rocky shore of Izu-Oshima Island, the northern limit of the Pacific distribution of the brown alga Eckloniopsis radicosa, young plant of the species appeared in late January and attained the maximum blade length of about 60 cm in mid June, 2002 and 2003, during the period of November, 2001 to January, 2004. After that the length of blades became progressively shorter from July to October and disappeared in November. The formation of zoosporangial soni on blades and release of spores were observed from July to October. Water temperature for release of spores or disappearance of blades was lowered by several degrees centigrade than that observed in more southern water of Japan, such as Wakayama and Kochi prefectures.
