Abstract

In an effort to curb greenhouse gas emissions from fossil fuel consumption, and to reduce economic dependence on oil, there are currently great expectations in Japan about the utilization of biomass as a source of energy, particularly for heat. Various types of waste are expected to be immediate sources of energy. The Ministry of the Environment has launched a new promotion program for Fiscal Year 2007 known as the Biomass to Energy Acceleration Strategy. This paper illustrates one possible scenario and specific efforts being made toward the large-scale introduction of biofuels under this new Strategy.
