Abstract

We experienced four cases of GIST of the rectum. Three cases complained of bloody stool and 1 case of dyschezia and constipation. In 3 cases, we performed transrectal biopsy; 2 cases were GIST, and 1 case was tumor of smooth muscle. However, the tumor was diagnosed as GIST by retrospective immunohistochemical study in 2005. In this case, partial resection of the rectum was conducted transsacrally. Tumor size was 78mm, and we found no lymph node metastasis, no invasion and 13 mitoses/10 high power fields. Local recurrence was found 18 months after surgery, so we performed a transanal resection of the tumor. But re-recurrence was found 47 months later, and the case died.<br> In the other 3 cases, the tumor size ranged 52_??_85mm, mitoses/10 HPF were below 2. No recurrences were found, but 2 of the 3 cases died of other diseases. We summarize the reported cases of rectal GIST in Japan and discuss the features of GIST recurrence.
