This paper explores the influence that functional differentiation and the renewal of buildings would have on the urban landscape of the central district in Kyoto, focusing on exterior colors of buildings. New perspectives on ideal urban landscapes are introduced by taking regionalcharacteristics into consideration.
To clarify distinctive patterns of urban landscapes in colors, buildings on “main streets” (Karasuma St. and Shijo St.) are compared with those on “local streets” (Shin-machi St., Sanjo St., and Bukkouji St.) using four indices: 1) width and number of stories; 2) floor uses; 3) main exterior color; and 4) colors of advertisement signs. Color data were collected based on visual colorimetry using the Muncell renotation system.
Analyses of the color data showed that urban landscapes colors are determined by two types of color: corporate colors and traditional local colors. Corporate colors can be defined as colors that give more importance to corporate identity than to regional characteristics. Traditional local colors are geographically and historically fostered in the locality, reflecting local nature, culture, and society. In this case study in Kyoto, the prevailing local colors are sumi-black, dark red, and white, which are used in the kimono industry and are found in Kyo-machiya, the traditional townhouses of Kyoto. In other words, traditional local colors are regional characteristics that find expression in colors. Therefore this paper regards corporate colors and traditional local colors as new indices to consider the sustainability of vernacular landscapes. In examining the colors of urban landscapes, it is important to focus on differences in spatial uses and the colors of advertisement signs placedbased on functional differences of spatial uses.
A polarization was found in color landscapes using corporate colors and traditional local colors as indices in the central district of Kyoto. On one hand, main streets have seen an accumulation of wide-fronted mid-rise to high-rise buildings, business and commercial (retail and restaurant) functions, and numerous advertisements in corporate colors. On the other hand, local-streets have seen an accumulation of narrow-fronted low-rise to mid-rise buildings, residential and business functions combined in dwellings, and some advertisements in traditional local colors.
It is clear that in the course of urban renewal with functional differentiations, central districts have experienced an uninterrupted expansion of corporate colors on main streets and the loss of traditional local colors on local streets. The spread of corporate colors has led to the disappearance of regional characteristics from the urban color landscape.
