Abstract

Three wild Japanese serows (<I>Capricornis crispus</I>) infected with parapox virus in Tokyo Metropolitan area were examined for pathologic lesions. Multifocal papular lesions were seen on the lips, eyelids, oral mucosa and/or on adjacent skin. Histopathologically, keratinocytes showed ballooning and marked proliferation, and eosinophilic cytoplasmic inclusions were frequently observed. Electron microscopy revealed a number of parapox virions within ballooned keratinocytes.
