Abstract

Three wild Japanese serows (Capricornis crispus) infected with parapox virus in Tokyo Metropolitan area were examined for pathologic lesions. Multifocal papular lesions were seen on the lips, eyelids, oral mucosa and/or on adjacent skin. Histopathologically, keratinocytes showed ballooning and marked proliferation, and eosinophilic cytoplasmic inclusions were frequently observed. Electron microscopy revealed a number of parapox virions within ballooned keratinocytes.
