Abstract

A male Japanese black calf born by the embryo transfer showing diarrhea and common cold-like symptoms at 4 days of age, died 7 days later. At necropsy there were scattered dark-red spots in the lungs, multiple dark-red spots in the small intestinal mucosa and swelling of some mesenteric lymphonodes. The thymus was remarkably atrophied. Histology revealed the absence of Hassal bodies, multiple necrotic foci in the liver, cattarrhal bronchopneumonia and multiple necroses in the tunicapropria in the whole intestinal mucosa. In these lesions and the esophagal mucosa, yeast cells and short fungal pseudohyphae were detected by Grocott and PAS stains, and yeast cells were positive for antibody to Candida spp. by immunostain. Candida tropicalis was isolated in pure culture from the lungs, liver and mesenteric lymphonodes.
