Abstract

Slaughtered pigs were subjected to isolation of Erysipelothrix rhusiopathiae and determination of antibody titers of joint fluid by growth-agglutination (GA) test. Of 501 pigs with arthritis, 133, 64, 30, 10, 12, 6, 31, 65, 58 and 92 cases showed the GA titers of 1: 2, 1: 4, 1: 8, 1: 16, 1: 32, 1: 64, 1: 128, 1: 256, 1: 512 and 1: 1, 024, respectively. E. rhusiopathiae was isolated from 173 of 246 cases showing GA titers of 1: 128 or higher, but not from 255 cases showing GA titers of 1: 64 or lower. The GA titers of the sera from 60 normal slaughtered pigs as a control were 1: 32 or lower except for 2 cases with 1: 64. Swine arthritis cases with GA titers of 1: 128 or higher were considered to be due to E. rhusiopathiae, while the casses with 1: 64 or lower titers were not.
