Abstract

P. trehalosi was isolated from 19 (30.6%) of 62 tonsils and from 1 (5.0%) each of 20 conjunctival and nasal swabs in cattle. A total of 43 isolates were divided into two biotypes; biotype I (7 isolates) was positive for fer-mentations of arbutin, salicin and cellobiose and hydrolysis of esuclin while biotype II (36 isolates) was all negative. DNA from 11 isolates tested was strongly hybridized with biotinylated DNA from the type strain ATCC29703 of P. trehalosi. Nineteen isolates (44.2%) were shown to belong to both serotypes 3 and 15, 18 (41.9%) to serotype 10 while at lower titers, 1 (2.3%) to serotype 4, and the remaining 5 (11.6%) were untypable.
