Abstract

The effects of extraction of retained deciduous canines for malocclusion of permanent canines were studied. Eighteen dogs including 6 breeds such as Pomeranian, Maltese and Toy Poodle were used in this study. Nine cases were males and the others were females. The dogs ranged from 5 to 11 months (mean: 7.3mos) in ages, and 1.5 to 4.5kg (mean: 2.3kg) in body weight. It was found that 41 sites in 12 dogs (75.9%) were prevented from malocclusion of permanent canines by the extraction of retained deciduous canines. Good occlusion of permanent canines after extraction of retained deciduous canines was obtained in all dogs that were operated on between 5 and 6 months old. Malocclusion of permanent canines was seen in all dogs that underwent extraction of deciduous canines between 10 and 11 months old. Both the occlusal conditions were also observed in dogs operated between 7 and 8 months old.
