Abstract

The bone development for 10 months after birth was investigated radiographically in Japanese Black beef cattle bred in Kagoshima. In 12 portions of the epiphysis monthly measured, the length of the epiphyseal line from a lateral view of the distal radius showed the most remarkable growth, while the groth rate was minimum in the distal metacarpal epiphysis from a lateral view. There were no significant differences between males and females. The epiphyseal growth rate was found to be variable depending on the ages in month, in contrast to their large weight gain during the growth period. The standard ossification of the cattle seemed to be similar to that of the horse, but the maturation speed was different from the horse depending on the part of the epiphysis.
