Abstract

Six SPF cats showing “lumbar paralysis” with abnormal gait of the hind limb, and dysstasia without pain were studied histopathologically. In the central nervous system lesions were characterized by spongy changes of myelin sheaths with vacuoles of varying size accompanied with infiltration of macrophages and plump reactive astrocytes and occasionally with secondary axonal degenaration. Degeneration of the white matter was present throughout the length of the spinal cord, more severely in the thoracic and lumbar levels than in the cervical level. The severity of lesions was proportional to the degree of ataxic conditions. There were perivascular cuffing of fat granule cells and astrogliosis in the brain white matter, which appeared mainly in non-ataxic cases.
