Abstract

One hundred and seventy-two healthy and 197 diseased dogs were examined for anti-nuclear antibodies (ANA) by indirect immunofluorescence using feline kidney cell culture (CRFK). While all the healthy dogs showed ANA titers lower than 1: 40, some of the diseased dogs showed ANA titers of 1: 40 or higher; one of 8 cases with endocrine diseases, 1 case with systemic lupus erythematodes-like disease, 1 of 25 cases with immunemediated disease or allergy, 7 of 47 cases with neoplasia, 2 of 28 cases with bacterial or viral infection, 2 of 25 cases with parasitic infection, and 1 of 63 others. Strongly positive samples were also examined with other cell lines HmLu, MDCK and Hep 2, suggesting that there might be false negative cases using only a single cell line.
