Abstract

The present activities and the situation of the nurses who had taken the Hokkaido course of ostomy rehabilitation during 1988 to 1998 were surveyed using questionnaire. Sixty five percent of them were actively working for ostomy care. 74.1 % of them were working as staff for ostomy care. But half of them had experienced job switch. Before taking the course they had given patients information of stoma preoperatively and 45.7% had made stoma site marking. After taking the course, the knowledge and the method of making stoma site marking have been improved. Fifty six of the hospitals in Hokkaido where these nurses were working have stoma clinic, although only 26.5% of the hospitals in Japan except Hokkaido have stoma clinic. This fact suggests that the Hokkaido course of ostomy rehabilitation has been playing an important role to educate nurses and to improve stoma care in Hokkaido.
