Abstract
Diffuse sclerosing osteomyelitis (DSO) of the mandible is a relatively uncommon, non-suppurative, chronic inflammation of obscure etiology. Various treatments have been reported, but long-term results remain unsatisfactory. We describe a patient who remarkably responded to hyperbaric oxygen therapy (HBO) in conjunction with conservative surgery (saucerisation and trepanation). Serial panoramic radiography, computed tomography, and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) were employed to assess the healing progress. Follow-up MRI was the most sensitive technique for evaluating restoration of bone marrow vascularization. This study presents objective evidence of the success of our treatment, evaluated on the basis of images obtained over a 3-year follow-up period.
