On the formation of the Yamagata Basin and its circumferential mountains, the geological structure of the basin and the erosion system of the mountainside have been studied separately. In the present study, they are examined as connected by common tectonic movement. Tectonic movement in this region originates in compressive stress from the Pacific plate since 10Ma. The compressive tectonic movement is divided into “primary compressive movement”, which slowly caused deformation over a long period, and “second compressive movement” which caused rapid shortening after the middle Pleistocene. The Yamagata Basin changed to a new sedimentary field and formed thick sediments with this second compressive movement. On the other hand, a big collapse occurred in the volcanic mountains, and many rapid erosion phenomena like landslides scraped off the non-volcanic mountains. This erosions caused by the second compressive movement was called “neoerosion”. The topography observed at present is a product of this neoerosion.
