To observe the precipitation particles that cause weak layers in a snow pack, snow packs were formed in a controlled cold room (approximately-5°C); natural snow was allowed to fall through an opening on the roof and an automated recording system for the identification of the snow types was simultaneously operated. In this observation, weak layers that were caused by both graupel and snow crystals were observed and the characteristics of the falling snow-the types of solid precipitation and its dimensions and intensities-were measured by the automated recording system. The results indicate that a weak layer is caused by the intensive precipitation of large graupels, for example, more than 3 mm in diameter. Therefore this type of weak layer can be predicted by detecting the intensity of large graupels. The weak layers caused by snow crystals were found to be caused by rime-free crystals, including plane dendritic crystals, falling in calm weather conditions, as reported in previous articles. However, since their intensities were not considerably strong and since the dimensions of the snow were not considerably large, it was difficult to distinguish the characteristics of the falling snow that causes this type of weak layer from other types of falling snow purely on the basis of the identification of snow types in our system. For the prediction of this type of weak layer, more sophisticated monitoring systems, integration of many other elements, or both might be necessary.
