The Sevenband grouper, Epinephelus septemfasciatus was cultured in indoor tanks in 2004 and 2005. The tanks used for experimental treatments were maintained under conditions of low water temperature (14.5 -17.0°C) and short day-length (6h: 18h, L: D) from April to the end of July. Afterwards, the water temperature and photoperiod were gradually increased to reach 18.5°C and long day-length (14h: 10h, L: D) by September. The control tank was assumed to be at natural ambient water temperature and photoperiod. At the end of August, pre-vitellogenic oocytes and over-ripened eggs were collected from fish cultured under control conditions and vitellogenic oocytes were collected from fish cultured under treatment conditions. Artificial fertilization by HCG injection in September produced no fertilized eggs from fish under control conditions, but fertilized eggs were obtained from fish under treatment conditions. A comparison of floating eggs rate, fertilization rate, hatching rate, Survival Activity Index (SAT) and 10 days after hatching survival rate for spawning in September (treatment) and May (control) found no significant differences (P>0.05, t-test) . The fish produced were raised to juvenile stage. We conclude that it is possible to delay spawning of the sevenband grouper until September by manipulation of water temperature and photoperiod.
