<jats:title>Abstract</jats:title> <jats:p>A molecular container composed of monodeoxy-calix[4]arene and calix[4]arene is synthesized. The host binds planar cationic guests. The deoxy-aromatic ring acts as an open door when the guest is absent and closes on guest binding.</jats:p>
