Abstract

<p>The development of education tools to teach about energy and environment and a program for elementary schools are described in this paper. A regional collaboration among elementary schools in Iwate, universities and municipal governments was utilized to develop the program and the tools effectively. The education program was developed on the basis of an environmental education program in Sweden, and was converted with reference to the course of study in elementary education prescribed by the Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology. The education program on energy and the environment was designed for children to acquire skills through a large number of experiences obtained from demonstrations and experiments. The developed program and learning tools were applied to a class in the elementary school and was evaluated by questionnaires after the class. The results showed that the learning tools and the learning program were effective in teaching children to act locally to promote sustainable development.</p>
