Abstract

Polymeric materials prepared from renewable natural resources are now being accepted as “bio-based polymers.” Among them, polylactides (PLA) have been accepted by industry as the first manufacturing product. More recently, it has been shown that combination of enantiomeric poly(L-lactide)( PLLA)a nd poly(D-lactide)( PDLA)c an afford a wider range of properties compared to the single PLLA. Typically, the PLLA/PDLA stereocomplex formed by simple polymer blend shows high melting nature (230°C), while stereoblock polylactides (sb-PLA) consisting of PLLA and PDLA stereo sequences can provide different properties depending on the stereo sequence ratios. These novel PLA polymers showing high performance are named as “Neo-PLA” and developed as fibers and films that retains sustainability or bio-based nature.
