Abstract
Environmentally benign processes for polymer synthesis are of great importance for the establishment of green and sustainable polymer chemistry. From the standpoint of saving natural resources and avoiding carbon dioxide emission, the use of renewable or biomass resources is essential for the production of such polymers. The application of bioprocesses, such as fermentation and enzymatic reaction, may act as a key role for environmentally benign processes in the next generation. Furthermore, lipase acts effectively as a catalyst for the polymer synthesis in new media, supercritical carbon dioxide and ionic liquids. This highlight review focuses on environmentally benign processes for polymer synthesis, degradation for chemical recycling and cross-linking. The sustainable chemical recycling of polymer using an enzyme is also discussed.
