This paper reviews analytical techniques for printing paper, focusing on recently-developed techniques and recently-revised testing standards. The review covers analyses of pulp fibers; paper components including fillers and pigments, sizing agents, fluorescent brightening agent and resins originating from wood; microscopic observation including optical and fluorescence microscopes, electron microscope, scanning probe microscope and ultrasonic microscope; basic physical properties such as density, sheet formation, fiber orientation and surface roughness; optical properties such as brightness, opacity and sheet and print glosses; liquid absorption properties including absorption rate, contact angle and micro-sizing degree; mechanical properties such as tensile strength, tensile deformation distribution and frictional coefficients; and recycled pulp analysis including ratio of recycled pulp to total fibrous raw materials and visible contraries.
