There are many aspects of printing evaluation. For example, there are observations of prints using optical microscopes, measurements of color density and gloss on prints, the determination of amount of transferred ink and the thickness of ink layer, the evaluation of ink penetration, and so on. In this special review, recent evaluation of ink penetration and distribution is introduced. Ink penetration was evaluated after a cross section of prints was prepared by focused ion beam (FIB). Next, ink penetration was directly observed with a confocal laser scanning microscope (CLSM). In addition, the characterization of phase separation in ink vehicle film was evaluated using scanning probe microscope (SPM).
