Polymer electrolyte fuel cells (PEFCs) have received much attention for new power source of vehicles and mobile applications. Proton conducting polymer electrolytes are one of key components for PEFCs and are required further performance gains. Hydrocarbon polymer electrolytes are expected to surpass commercial fluorinated polymer electrolytes in the cost and performance at high temperature and low humidity. In this paper, I introduce the hydrocarbon polymer electrolytes, synthesis, and fuel cell performance. These materials show excellent proton conductivity and unique water uptake behavior even at high temperature. Although hydrocarbon materials exhibited lower chemical stability than fluorinated materials, their fuel cells have possessed high reliability and durability.
