Abstract

A 64-year-old male with liver cirrhosis was diagnosed with hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) of 1 cm in diameter in 2001. He was treated by percutaneous ethanol injection therapy (PEIT) four times and/or transcatheter arterial embolization (TAE) three times for recurrent HCC. Since mediastinal lymphnode metastasis was found in 2003, chemotherapy with UFT® was started. However UFT therapy could be continued only a half year because of pancytopenia, and because there was no change in either HCC or mediastinal lymphnode metastasis, PEIT and TAE continued. Due to the progression of HCC, chemotherapy with TS-1® was started in January 2005. After 6 months both HCC and mediastinal lymphnode metastasis disappeared and no recurrence has been found. It is probable that HCC and mediastinal lymphnode metastasis were sensitive to 5-FU, and the concentration of 5-FU was kept high by gimeracil (CDHP).<br>
