Abstract

A case of false reduction of inguinal hernia is reported. A 57-year-old man with a past history of left inguinal hernia was transferred to our hospital due under the suspected diagnosis of intestinal obstruction. Though he had persistent abdominal pain, nausea, and vomiting along with slight abdominal bulging on admission, the physical examination exhibited no apparent finding which could be suspected as an inguinal hernia. CT scan and ultrasonography showed abnormal looping of the small intestine covered with a hernia sac located in the lower abdominal cavity. The patient's recent history revealed that the patient himself had tried to reduce the inguinal hernia roughly by force before the symptoms increased. False reduction of an inguinal hernia was suspected and an emergency operation was performed. The hernia sac was not located in the inguinal canal, and it had strangulated the small intestine which was detected as the looped intestine by the CT scan. A review of the literature in terms of diagnosis, and treatment for this rare disease is also presented.
