Abstract

For the last 25 years since 1980, we have experienced 6916 pediatric surgical admissions of which 2193 cases, 31.7%, were emergency cases. Sixty percent of 200 newborns with intestinal obstructions and abdominal wall defects were prenatally diagnosed. Surgery for the acute abdomen was performed in 1039 infants and children, 659 of whom (63.4%) underwent an appendectomy. Intussusception was the major cause of intestinal bleeding. We developed an abdominal trauma score (ATS) which consists of the physical findings and laboratory data to evaluate the severity of the injury. The ATS correlated well with the Injury Severity Score. We invented a magnet tube to remove alkaline batteries from the stomach. The magnet tube is now commercially available and can be used to remove many kinds of foreign bodies containing ferrous metal, such as steel.
