Abstract

We reviewed the revised version of the Japanese Guidelines on Acute Pancreatitis with a specific focus on the items concerning diagnosis. The Table of Contents in the revised version contains 5 items, i.e., diagnostic criteria, clinical symptoms and signs, laboratory examination, diagnostic imaging, and etiological diagnosis. The diagnostic criteria for acute pancreatitis are now under revision by the Research Group for Intractable Diseases and Refractory Pancreatic Diseases, which is sponsored by the Japanese Ministry of Health, Labour, and Welfare;thus, the current criteria and revised version are also listed. The clinical values of the urinary trypsinogen-2 test strip were reported to be comparable with those of blood amylase and lipase. This promising diagnostic tool seemed to be convenient for the immediate diagnosis of pancreatitis. In the etiological diagnosis, the causes of acute pancreatitis are listed and described in detail. To improve the patient survival rate, it is essential, particularly in the case of gallstone pancreatitis, to diagnose the condition immediately and undertake the subsequent endoscopic biliary intervention.
