Abstract

Aluminum potassium sulfate tannic acid (ALTA) is able to induce noninvasive sclerosis and involution of hemorrhoids through initiation of inflammatory reaction. Considering this pharmacological effect, we hypothesized that the administration of ALTA could be used as a minimally invasive treatment of rectal mucosal prolapse, for which the operational method for internal hemorrhoids is currently considered to be suitable. Thus, we treated 51 patients with rectal mucosal prolapse by ALTA between April 2005 and November 2006. There was no severe adverse effect, and anal pressure was not affected after the administration of ALTA. Seven patients relapsed, three patients were administered ALTA again, and the others have simply been observed because of the improvement of symptoms. We guessed that a cause of the prolapse was insufficient quantity of ALTA injected or due to a technical problem. We therefore think that ALTA may be indicated for rectal mucosal prolapse. <br>
