Abstract

Since a comprehensive prohibition of both the production and use of asbestos has now been achieved, the obvious next step regarding asbestos is proper treatment of asbestos waste, currently estimated to total forty million tons. Though analytical methods for deding with asbestos have been established, along with its regulation for there are other concerns originating from the fibrous property common to asbestos. This article reviews, analytical methods for waste treatment of asbestos, including official methods for testing asbestos in the air as well as in solids and water samples. Detection methods, such as electron microscopy and X-ray diffraction, are also reviewed. There is a presentation of measurement results for asbestos in the air and solid samples generated form waste treatment facilities as well. The paper concludes by demonstrating certain requirements for analytical methods necessary in tackling the problem of waste treatment for asbestos.
