Abstract

We describe two patients with diverticulitis accompanied by abscesses that were successfully treated by endoscopic abscess drainage. A 27-year-old woman and 43-year-old man were admitted to our hospital with complaints of right lower abdominal pain and fever. Abdominal computed tomography revealed diverticulitis with surrounding abscess formation. Colonoscopy revealed severe colonic inflammation with abscess caused by diverticulitis. Under colonoscopy, the abscesses were drained by washing and aspiration. Purulent discharge from the abscess cavity was removed and the abdominal pain and fever were obviously reduced. Both patients received conservative therapy with antibiotic drugs, and were discharged without complications at 4 and 7 days respectively, after endoscopic drainage. After securing written, informed consent and providing surgical support, endoscopic transluminal drainage is an effective approach to the treatment of severe diverticulitis with penetrating abscess formation.<br>
