Abstract

Purpose: We studied the actual conditions of abdominal emergency operations at a cancer center hospital.
Methods: Between May 2003 and December 2006, we performed 139 abdominal emergency operations (4.3%), of a total of 3,252 operations. We clarified the clinical characteristics of the abdominal emergency operations.
Results: The cases of emergency operation, which included 36 for acute appendicitis, 15 for ileus, 15 for intestinal perforation, and 10 for inflammatory bowel disease, were almost all lower intestinal disease, and the operations were performed by a specific colorectal surgeon.
Conclusion: Emergency operations place a large burden on most colorectal surgeons, who take part in outpatient examination, operation, endoscopic examination, chemotherapy and palliative care. Emergency operations added to their scheduled work. It is necessary to share the work, in order to maintain the quality of medical treatment and risk management.
