Abstract

The alien Formosan squirrels were introduced into Kamakura City, Japan in the 1950s. Recently they have been spreading through eastern Kanagawa Prefecture. In order to know the movement of this species in urban environments, PHS (Personal Handyphone System) were equipped to 4 individuals captured in a woodlot surrounded by residential area. The durations of tracking were 9-21 days and 60-80% of points were successfully acquired. One of the 4 individuals moved to other woodlots within 3 km2 area by crossing the residential area. The PHS was a useful tool to track the animals in urban environments, if it only became smaller in size and sustained for longer time.
