Abstract

Recent results for flexible thin-film solar cells, including those obtained by the author’s group, are presented. The most important advantage of flexible thin-film solar cells using a polymer film or metal sheet substrate is lightness. Their weight is about one tenth that of conventional solar cells, resulting in their accelerated use. It is also easy to use the roll-to-roll process for their mass production. Flexible solar cells are now fabricated as thin-film silicon, compound semiconductor, organic thin-film and dye-sensitized solar cells. Some of these flexible solar cells are mass-produced. In this article, flexible thin-film silicon solar cells are introduced in detail. The importance of texture formation techniques on a polymer substrate for light trapping is shown using the results obtained from two projects in Japan and European Union.
