To elucidate the selection of pediatric emergency facilities by area residents, the weights of factors used to select hospitals were relatively evaluated by conducting a questionnaire survey with the aid of a paired comparison method. Seven factors that may be considered in selecting a hospital when one's child falls seriously ill were cited. For each pair of selection factors, a question was asked as to which is considered more important and by how much. Among parents of children attending kindergartens, 153 questionnaires were distributed, out of which 73 valid responses were returned. The results indicated that the guardians considered the presence of a pediatrician more important than other factors in selecting a pediatric emergency facility. The tendency to regard the distance to the pediatric facility as important was minimal; but it was suggested that those residing in the vicinity of a medical facility resisted being far from a pediatric department. A need was recognized to offer public policies with due consideration toward selection factors that are related to assurance (such as establishment of a medical referral system between local pediatric practitioners and general physicians).
