Abstract
My work and studies with the endoscope have a long history. The first endoscope I had experience with was the cystoscope. I had been one of the members of the First Department of Internal Medicine of the University of Tokyo as an assistant and was engaged in the gastrocamera for the Gastroenterology Group. Then, the following January, I moved my position at Ibaraki Prefectural Tomobe Infirmary on my professor's order following the department rules. During daily clinical work, I had been taught bronchoscopy, esophagoscopy and sigmoidoscopy by Dr. Kubo who was the head of the surgical department of this infirmary. My research themes after coming back to the university were gastrocamera and studies of gastritis, with special reference to findings obtained with the gastrocamera. These were also the main themes of my medical degree. In 1961, I worked with gastrocamera at the Royal Prince Alfred Hospital, one of the teaching hospitals of the University of Sydney as one of the senior registrars and had learned flexible gastroscopy from Sir William, the head of the unit. After completing my doctor's degree, I engaged in colonoscopy and the development of instruments which led to the successful development of the shorter type of colonic fiberscope. Moreover, I concentrated on studies of the ultraviolet and fluorescence gastrocameras, and pursued the completion and clinical study of the infrared videoendoscope. In 1968, I applied high-frequency electric current in taking biopsy specimens and then developed polypectomy. Since then, I have been invited to Laennec Hospital and Bichat Hospital in Paris, Luisen Hospital in Aachen, Germany, Leiden University in the Netherlands, the University of Vienna in Austria and several other universities and facilities in Belgium to lay the groundwork for the implementation of colonoscopy in their clinics. I was also engaged in the prototype production of the videoendoscope, and at the same time, was involved as the president in administration of the Japan Gastroenterological Endoscopy Society (JGES), the World Organization for Digestive Endoscopy (OMED) and The Asian-Pacific Society for Digestive Endoscopy (APSDE). Over the course of those careers, I got involved in the clinical practice, research projects and the education of young doctors in the gastroenterology group of the first department of internal medicine, School of medicine University of Tokyo and I took up the position as the professor and chairman of the second department of medicine, National Defense Medical College. Also, I have taught endoscopy and gastroenterology to younger members at Teikyo University and St. Marianna University School of Medicine as a visiting professor. I have enjoyed and really appreciated my close relationship with endoscopy.
