The safety and efficacy of the use of an oral rehydration solution (ORS, jelly-type product) were investigated in patients undergoing endogastroduodenoscopy (EGD) and were compared between ORS and control groups. The ORS group received 200 g of ORS at 2 and 1 hr before EGD examination. Gastric content volume in the ORS groups ranged between 41 ± 28 ml and 67 ± 24 ml, with no increase as compared to the control groups (oral group, 66 ± 25 ml and nasal group, 54 ± 35 ml), and there were no cases of nausea or vomiting. In the nasal group that received ORS 2 hr before the EGD examination, the volume of foamy saliva was less than in the nasal control group, allowing significantly easier gastric observation. The feeling of hunger up to the examination was significantly improved in all of the ORS groups, except the ORS oral group that received ORS 2 hr before EGD. These results support the idea that the intake of ORS before an EGD examination is useful for both patients and physicians, enabling the examination to be conducted safely.
