Abstract

We compared the annual production and quality of cut roses and total greenhouse air conditioning and heating costs using a conventional oil-fired air heater (133.4 Wm-2) and a hybrid system based on an electric heat pump (49.2 Wm-2) combined with an oil-fired air heater (199.4 Wm-2) in identical greenhouses in Iwata City, Japan, from June 2009 to July 2010. We divided the year into periods before night cooling (June to July), during night cooling (August to September), and during heating (october to May). Production of cut roses did not differ among the periods. There was no difference in total cut rose weight between systems during the period before night cooling, but production increased in the hybrid system during the night cooling period. The number of cut roses with stem length >60 cm in the hybrid system was approximately twice that in the conventional system during the night cooling period. And the number of non-standard roses was higher in the conventional system. The annual production value increased by 415 yen m-2 in the hybrid system; 90 % of the increase occurred during the night cooling period. The hybrid system reduced energy costs by about 25 % per year compared with the conventional system based on oil and electricity prices in 2009-2010. The hybrid system both decreases heating costs at a time of soaring oil prices and improves rose yield and quality by nighttime cooling. The installation cost can be amortized in less than 8 years at an oil cost of 32 yen L-1 due to the reduced costs and increased profits, which greatly improve the economics of rose cultivation.
