Abstract
A 40-year-old man underwent partial jejunectomy for jejunal cancer (well- to moderately-differentiated, pSE, pN0, fStage II, curability A) in December 1997. Cisplatin was administered intraperitoneally during surgery, and tegafur-uracil was given for two years postoperatively. Follow up was stopped in March, 2005 due to the absence of findings indicating recurrence.
In December 2010, the patient visited our hospital with upper abdominal pain that occurred after a meal, and abdominal computed tomography (CT) suggested recurrence of jejunal cancer and lymph node metastasis. Partial jejunectomy was performed in February 2011. The lymph node metastasis observed near the previous anastomotic site was continuous with the jejunal tumor, and the patient was diagnosed with recurrence of jejunal cancer. The patient has been undergoing postoperative adjuvant chemotherapy, but he developed multiple metastases in the lung and other sites in June 2012.
Small intestinal cancer is a relatively rare disease that has a poor prognosis. The present patient developed recurrence even though none had occurred for 13 years following curative resection. The present case, which indicates the need for long-term postoperative follow-up that includes sufficient monitoring for recurrence in patients with small intestinal cancer, is reported along with a review of the literature.
