Abstract

This study is a close reading of Jonathan Edwards' letters after the Northampton revival in the early 1730's, while examines how the Evangelical communication network fostered a new public religious culture in the Atlantic world. Although Perry Miller viewed the Puritan influence in eighteenth-century America in terms of his "declension" theory, these letters present a vision for the propagation of the gospel through Evangelical endeavor. Having witnessed the New England "awakenings" during his ministry, and being informed about the revivals in Britain and her colonies, Edwards' Evangelical concern went beyond the geographical boundaries of Puritan New England. In his letters to Scottish Presbyterian ministers, Edwards shares his speculation about the beginning of the new age in his own generation, obviously inclining to the post-millennialist eschatological view. A further topic of this study is how the Evangelical culture in the British colonies relates to the influence of continental Pietism.
