Morphological changes in the filed emission cathode heated under electric fields were investigated in wide ranges of the electric field strength. A build-up process, which can be characterized with shoulders and stable regions in the emission current versus time curve, was observed in the measurement of the emission current. The activation energy of 2.0±0.2 eV/atom for surface selfdiffusion of Re atoms was deduced from the found build-up process. Small protrusions were formed on the cathode surfaces heated under high fields. As a result of formation of the protrusions there was a 50% reduction in the voltage required for a certain emission current. The observed morphological changes in the cathode could be interpreted by two factors : mechanical deformation deduced by electrostatic force, and the crystal growth induced by the mass transport from the shank to the apex of the cathode.
