Most models on visual word recognition assume that not only the word visually presented but also other words that are orthographically similar to that word, that is, its orthographic neighborhood are activated. Coltheart, Davelaar, Jonasson, and Besner (1977) defined the neighbor of a letter string as any word that can be generated by replacing a single letter from the base string. Many studies have shown that neighborhood size of the items affects the response times to words or nonwords visually and auditorially presented in recognition tasks. In this article, according to the definition of Coltheart et al., neighborhood size (Ncs) of 2-kanji-character-jukugo (Japanese compound words) were computed using the dictionary "KOHJIEN 4th edition". Three ways to count the neighbors of 2-kanji-character-jukugo were proposed in this article, and according to these ways, Ncs for 2965 JIS 1st kanji characters were computed. Using these tables, stimulus used to investigate visual word recognition in Japanese may be controled more strictly in the aspect of their neighborhood size.
