Abstract
Since we noticed that the biopsied skeletal muscle revealed significant "neurogenic changes" in all of the given 13 cases of diabetics, electron microscopically we have studied thoroughly the changes of intramuscular nerve which might contain motor nerve axons. As far as the studies of peripheral nerves in the reports of diabetics the investigators are mostly referred to the sural nerve. We summarize the results as follows. (a) Changes of the motor end plates. 1. Degenerative changes with appearance of the myelin bodies in the nerve terminals. 2. Existence of "empty folds of synaptic clefts". (b) Changes of intramuscular nerve bundle. 1. Existence of perineurium in which the axon has reduced and/or disappeared. We (tentatively) call them "empty perineurium". 2. Degeneration of the remaining axons. 3. We have confirmed the morphologic changes in the intramuscular nerve which endorse the neurogenic changes of the muscle fibers.
