The author describes the psychopathology of alteration os personality state in dissociative disorders including post-traumatic stress disorder. Most alter personalities of Dissociative Identity Disorder (DID) have consistent patterns of behavior and feeling, the proper names, functions, and origins which make up a system. According to H.S.Sullivan, they were dissociated from self due to childhood traumas and belong to the "not-me". On the other hand, altered states of personality in non DID patients are fragmental and their functions are limited. They are derived from minds split between "good-me" and "bad-me" due to chronic conflicts in childhood. When they experienced additional severe conflicts later, they would create personality fragments from the split minds to imaginatively enhance their autonomy.
