Change of the Subcutaneous Adipose Tissue, Muscle Thickness, Muscle Strength and Aerobic and Anaerobic Power for Three Years in KIT Baseball Players

Abstract

The purpose of this study was to investigate the change of their body composition and pysical fitness of twelve KIT baseball players for three years. As for their body composition, we measured the subcutaneous adipose tissue and the muascle thickness at 11sites of the body by means of ultrasonography. As for their physical fitness, we measured the maximum isometric strength, that is knee flexion, knee extension and standing elbow flexion of right and left sides, the PWC60%HRmax test and the maximum anaerobic power test within 7 second. These measurements were performed five times in three years. The following results were obtained: 1. The change of the subcutaneous adipose tissue increased largely at abdomen, triceps, erector supinae and subscapla of trunk and upper arm. But the values of this change did not obtaine the significance of difference in the statistics. In lower limb, the subcutaneous adipose tissue at quadriceps, hamstrings and gastrocnemius decreased significantly. 2. In the increasing rate of muscle thickness, all the sites except of forearm, biceps, tibialis anterior increased significantly for three years. The values of forearm and biceps were constant, but the values of tibialis anterior decreased significantly for three years. 3. In the physical fitness test, the values of the three kinds of tests of the maximum isometric strength increased for three years; especially the muscle strength improved from the 3rd measurement on. The maximum anaerobic power did not change for three years, but the value of the PWC60%HRmax increased in the period of their individual training, and decreased before and after the Kanagawa college baseball legue. In the three years of KIT baseball players' college life, their the muscle thickness and the muscle strength improved. We consider that is the results of introducing the weight training into their daily baseball practice.
