Abstract

In this paper I consider Robert Herrick's number symbolism in his figure poems, especially, "This "Crosee-Tree here" (N-268). This cruciform shape poem is intricate in numerological structure. A. Fowler pointed out Herrick's use of symbolic numbers 5 and 8 in his epithalamia and New Year poems. The first section deals with Fowler's interpretation. The second section considers the influence of Rabanus Maurus' De laudibus sanctae crucis and that of George Herbert's "Good Friday". The third section attempts to analyze the complex numerology of "This Crosse-Tree here". The final section treats numerological structures of "His Poetrie his Piiiar" (H-211), "Upon his departure hence" (H-475), "An Ode for him" (H-911), "The pillar of Fame" (H-1129) and "On Heaven" (N-106).
