The Manuscript 'Recipes of Dutch Surgery' (Oranda geka seiden) goes back to instructions given to the Confucian scholar and physician Mukai Genshô in 1656 at the Dutch trading post Dejima in Nagasaki. While the first reports on Western surgical treatment methods were drafted in 1650 by Inomata Denbei, a translator without medical knowledge, Mukai's report allows a rare glimpse on the early reception of Western explanations by a highly educated Japanese physician. The newly found manuscript 'Recipes of Dutch Surgery' (Oranda geka seiden) is the only source up to now that shows the names of the trading post chief Z. Wagener and the German physician Hans Jurian Hancke who gave the instructions. Furthermore an entry in Wagner's trading post diary has been discovered that refers to Wagner's and Hancke's signing of Mukai's report and its background. Therefore this manuscript will play a decisive role in sorting out the various and often corrupted manuscripts copies going back to Mukai's studies at Dejima.
