Since the oil crisis in 1973, the utilizations of coal, especially, coal liquifaction, gasification and chemical desulfunzation, have been drawing enoumous public attentions, and intensive research efforts have been devorted to them all over the world The accomplishments over a decade, however, have not always been satisfactory. One of the most serious problems in this particular field of science seems to be the lack of the basic research This article briefly reviews the recent development and problems of the coal chemistry in the United State.
