Effects of caffeine on the capability of simple numerical calculation and heart rate were examined on 85 first-year class students(male:13; female:72) of this nursing college. For evaluation of capability of simple numerical calculation, standard Uchida-Kraepelin test papers were used. After attainment of a nearly steady high level reflecting the improvement of capability brought about by exercise, students took either caffeine-free(Nescafe, gold blend, Nestle Co) or caffeine-containing coffee (250 mg of caffeine [JP, Maruishi Pharmaceutical. Co] was added to the above caffeine-free coffee) on double-blind principle. After around 20 min after drinking, students taking caffeine-containing coffee showed significantly higher numerical calculation capability. With these students numerical calculation capability was maintained high around 1 hour and even later after drinking, at which times the numerical calculation capability of the students who took caffeine-free coffee began to decline due probably to fatigue. Thus, it may be concluded that caffeine not only improves the capability of numerical calculation but also inhibits the development of fatigue due to repeated calculation. Heart rate was found to decrease with students taking caffeine-containing coffee. Errors in calculation tended to decrease with students taking caffeine-containing coffee as compared with those of the students taking caffeine-free coffee, but the differences were not significant.
